Bluecoat are hosting several events as part of this years WowFest by Writing on the Wall titled ‘Where are we now’.
Wednesday 1 May – Will Self
Will Self, one of the UK’s most admired and widely read writers, journalist and political commentator, launches WoWFest ‘19 with a keynote speech responding to the festival theme ‘Where Are We Now?’
Thursday 9 May – The Power of Fake News
Former Columnist of the Year, Brian Reade, Professor of Media and Communications at Goldsmiths, Des Freedman and Guardian columnist, Dawn Foster will discuss the influence and impact of fake information.
Monday 20 May – ‘Crime’ and Punishment
Renowned criminologists and sociologies Tony Platt (University of California) and Phil Scraton (The Violence of Incarceration/Hillsborough Report) discuss the social and political consequences of criminalisation.
Wednesday 22 May – An Evening with Ben Okri
Booker Prize-winning Nigerian writer Ben Okri discusses his career and his newest publication The Freedom Artist, an impassioned plea for justice and a penetrating examination of how freedom is threatened in a post-truth society.
Thursday 23 May – Citizens of Nowhere
Award-winning writers Jennifer Makumbi and Dina Nayeri will discuss migration and refuge, reading from their much-anticipated publications Manchester Happened and the Ungrateful Refugee.
Wednesday 29 May – Dave Ward
The writer reads from his new publication (Hawkwood Books), a unique collection of flash fiction and observations of urban life, accompanied by monochrome drawings by Bryan Biggs.
