If you are looking to participate in a new activity or try something a bit different this month, our HOP network members are offering all kinds of creative and cultural shenanigans.
At the last HOP meeting we were really lucky to get to try out one of Robert Goux’s drum circle workshops. Great fun, with absolutely no musical talent required. Robert is spending the summer on an epic musical journey from John O’Groats to Lands End, and he’ll be stopping off in Liverpool on 11th July to lead a drum circle at the Bombed Out Church.
Take a walk on the Wild Side at Everton Park and celebrate Liverpool and Manchester’s joint success in winning Grow Wild’s England flagship award. Enjoy a free family fun day packed with wildflowers, live music and entertainment, food stalls, creative workshops and even an archaeological football dig!

Fancy joining the Up for Arts Community Choir? They meet every Wednesday 6pm til 9pm at BBC Radio Merseyside on Hanover Street. No experience necessary – you just need to be up for having lots of fun and laughter, and of course singing. It’s mostly a cappella but you won’t be asked to sing on your own. Age range is 18 to over 80. The choir has done some amazing shows…including for the BBC at the Wolf Hall event in the Anglican Theatre; the opening of the Everyman Theatre and also performed in play called the Events at the Everyman – the first Liverpool group to perform on the stage when the theatre re-opened. The choir is the sister choir to Sense of Sound Singers so… call BBC Radio Merseyside’s ‘A’ Team on 0151 794 0984 for more info and register.
MDI hold an over 50’s dance class taught by Maxine Brown, on Wednesdays from 11am – 12.30pm (£3.50 per class). With a contemporary focus, these sessions are for people aged 50-plus interested in dance, wanting to stay fit and socialise with a wonderful group of people. The class uses taught exercises to encourage increased mobility, balance and fitness, as well as promoting memory within movement, by building on sequences to create dance works for performance (this is totally voluntary!). MDI also offer classes targeted specifically at people experiencing Parkinson’s Disease, or Alzheimers Disease which welcome carers. The attached pdf flyers provide information and contact details.
Mal Thomas, Health Trainer with PSS, has been in touch to tell us about a monthly high tea at St Columba Church Hall, next to Hunts Cross Medical Centre. There’s music, tea, coffee, sandwiches and cakes and a good time is had by all. This is a great opportunity for people who don’t get out much and are quite isolated to make new friends, reconnect with their local social scene, and to learn about other things they can do as well. Transport is provided to and from the venue and Mal would be delighted to welcome anyone who wishes to join in. This is open to people over 75 who live in the L25 area or use the following GP surgeries: Hunts Cross Medical Centre, Village Medical Centre in Quarry Street, or Woolton House Medical Centre. If you would like to find out more, ask at the surgery or ring 07825 240 611.
After the success of last year’s Over 50’s Sports Day, Healthiness Ltd will be holding another 50+ sports day again this year on Wednesday 12th August, between 12 – 4pm at Lark Lane Community Centre. Healthiness Ltd is a non profit that delivers a variety of community based exercise and health education sessions for older adults, adults experiencing mental ill health and learning disabilities within Liverpool. This is a chance to meet new friends and take part in a range of fun activities and games designed to improve coordination, balance, strength and flexibility such as bowling, relay races and agility courses. The event itself is free, but registration is required to attend. To confirm a place, please ring 0151 728 8874 or email email@example.com. And yes we know this isn’t happening until August, but we thought we’d give you an early heads up in case you want to get into training.
