Liverpool Cares October Social Clubs

Below is a list of our ​free​ Social Clubs in Liverpool for people aged 65 and above. All of these Liverpool Cares events are hosted by people in their twenties and thirties who want to meet you and hear your stories. Share your skills and learn new ones, all while making new friends in your community!

Please call Abbie on 0151 659 1789 to book your place on any of these clubs. Some clubs have limited space, and it’s important that they know who’s going along! ​You can also call if you’d like any more information or if you are unsure how to get to the clubs from your home.

 

Tuesday 1 October 10am – 12.30pm: International Day of Older Persons Network Meeting – City Centre

In conjunction with Happy Older People, we are going to be attending a network meeting all about challenging negative stereotypes of ageing. Now is your chance to talk about how ageing is portrayed in the media, how you feel about ageing, celebrating and representing ageing. There will also be a spoken word and poetry workshop to get involved in, led by Liverpool poet Curtis Watt.

Wednesday 3 October 6 – 8pm: Oktoberfest Party – City Centre

Come along to the very popular Baltic Market and celebrate Oktoberfest! Enjoy a free beer and a live Oompah band with your younger neighbours at this scouse version of the traditional German folk festival.

Bus routes: 26, 27, 82 and 204 stop on St James Place/Stanhope Street (5 minute walk away)

Sunday 6 October 11am – 1pm: History of Sefton Park Walk – Sefton Park

Walk through Sefton Park’s history, explore the landscape and how and why the park was designed the way it was. Learn about the latest Victorian inventions of the time to see how they changed the face of Liverpool, and the world!

Monday 7 October 6 – 8pm: Creative Writing – Writing from a different perspective – City Centre

At this creative writing session, we will try writing from a different perspective to our own! Will you be someone living in the year 2550, or a fed-up guardian angel whose human is prone to accidents? Get ideas from the group or think of your own. Complete beginners welcome at this fun, creative club.

Tuesday 8 October 11:30am – 1:30pm: Bread Making Class – Kensington

Come along and learn how to make a sourdough loaf at our bread making class! You’ll take a fresh loaf away at the end, and some starter dough so you can carry on baking at home. Spaces are very limited at this club, so please get in touch with Abbie to put your name in the lottery.

Wednesday 9 October 11am – 12:00pm: Reminiscence Session – Mathew Street and Erics – City Centre

Get together and talk about music which means something to you, this month’s theme is Mathew Street and Erics. Do you have any memories of these places that you’d like to share? The museum provides music, videos and artefacts from their collections to inspire your memories.

Wednesday 16 October 6 – 8pm: Shared Reading – City Centre

This social club is a really fun and interesting way to read as a group. We read short stories and poems aloud, and pause after each paragraph to analyse the text, discuss the characters and guess what happens next. Non-readers welcome, this group is for everyone!

Saturday 19 October 12:30 – 2:00pm: Technology Workshop – City Centre
If you’re struggling with a particular gadget, phone or laptop then bring it along to our technology workshop! We will pair you up with a younger neighbour who will try to answer all of your questions. Learn how to text, email, surf the internet or just get going on that tablet you’ve had lying around for ages!

Bus routes: 75, 76, 80, 80A, 86A, 86C

Monday 21st October 6:00pm-8:30pm: Visit to Bluecoat School – Wavertree

We’ve been invited to come along to Bluecoat School for an evening of fun. There will be a welcome drink, followed by a performance by one of their students who will play some popular songs on their famous organ for us. Staff will tell us a little about the history of the school, before we’re treated to some fantastic live folk music and get up on our feet for Ceilidh dancing from the “Science Ceilidh”, a group that teaches science using the famous Scottish dance! People with two left feet absolutely welcome.

Bus routes: 62, 68, or meet on Allerton Road and get the bus up with us!

Tuesday 22 October 6 – 8pm: Board Games – Wavertree

Come along and play some board games with your younger neighbours! This club is always full of laughter and friendly competition. Play something classic like cluedo or scrabble, or pick something new and wacky to play from the board game lined walls of this fun café!

Wednesday 23 October 12 – 2pm: Visit to Western Approaches – City Centre

We will gain access to this fascinating WWII bunker to learn all about the people that worked there and why it’s known as “the place where World War II was won”. Expect to see unexploded bombs, how staff living quarters looked and the famous “Map room”. There are limited spaces at this club, so a lottery will be in place. Call Abbie to put your name in the lottery!

Thursday 24 October 6 – 8pm: Halloween Craft Club – Kensington

Come along to this Halloween themed craft club and create some decorations to take home just in time for the spooky holiday! We’ll be making Halloween garlands, bat chandeliers and more! Absolute beginners welcome.

Saturday 26 October 12 – 3pm: Film Club – City Centre

Watch an afternoon film with your younger neighbours at this monthly club. Take a vote on the day for what you’ll be watching, will it be a Halloween movie for October? Or something a little more light hearted? You decide!

Tuesday 29 October 6 – 8pm: Singalong – Halloween special – City Centre

This month’s singalong is a Halloween special! Feel free to come in costume, as we sing spooky classics like the monster mash, thriller and more. We’ll also be singing some of the classic song requests that we took at last month’s club. You don’t have to be a good singer to join in with this club, we give 10/10 for effort!

Wednesday 30 October 1 – 3pm: Business Visit to Ripstone Games – City Centre

25 Parliament Street, Liverpool, L8 5RN

This business creates, develops and publishes video games for the world to enjoy. We will be taking a look around their city centre office, chatting to staff about their different roles and having a go at playing some of the games that they’ve created, including a virtual reality game! Come along and see how much work spaces have changed over the years. There are limited spaces at this club, so a lottery will be in place. Call Abbie to put your name in the lottery!

Bus routes: 26, 27, 82 and 204 stop on St James Place/Stanhope Street (5 minute walk away) and Abbie will be getting the bus from Liverpool One to this club, you can join her if it’s easier.
