Liverpool Cares’ Social Clubs in February 2020

Below is a list of Liverpool Cares’ ​free​ Social Clubs in Liverpool for people aged 65 and above. All of the events are hosted by people in their twenties and thirties who want to meet you and hear your stories. Share your skills and learn new ones, all while making new friends in your community!

Please call Abbie on 0151 659 1789 to book your place on any of these clubs. Some clubs have limited space, and it’s important that we know who’s coming along! ​You can also call if you’d like any more information or if you are unsure how to get to the clubs from your home.

 

Monday 3 February 6:00-8:00pm: Singalong – City Centre

The ever-popular singalong is back! And this month we’re having an early Valentine’s theme with a couple of love songs thrown in the mix. Come and sing along with your younger neighbours and our fantastic pianist Jez. Absolute beginners welcome, we provide the lyrics and some lovely free drinks and food from the restaurant.

Tuesday 4 February 11:00am-1:00pm: Sourdough Bread Making – Kensington

At this community bakery you’ll bake some of baker Owen’s pre-prepared dough so you have a lovely warm ciabatta-style loaf to take away with you. You’ll also learn how to make your own bread dough from scratch to take home and bake yourself. Owen will show you how to make lovely pittas, flatbread, bread rolls or pizza bases – just to show how versatile your dough is! There is limited space at this social club, so please call Abbie to register your interest and put your name in the lottery. She will call you in plenty of time to let you know if you are successful, and as ever, if you don’t hear back your name has unfortunately not been picked.

Wednesday 5 February 5:00-7:00pm: Screening of “Our Eddy” – Wavertree

Come together to watch “Our Eddy”, a Liverpool story about a loving family who have lived at the same address for 30 odd years, and desperate to escape Eddy bets on the horses. Filmed locally, we will also be joined by the director of the film Jonny Hirst, to talk about his inspiration and answer any questions you may have!

Thursday 6 February 6:00-8:00pm: Craft Club Chinese Lantern Making – Kensington

Kensington Community Learning Centre, 291-299 Kensington, L7 2RG

Happy Chinese New Year! To celebrate the famous Yuan Xiao (lantern festival), we will be creating our own paper lanterns and learning more about this ancient Chinese tradition.

Friday 7 February 6:00pm onwards: Mardi Gras Experience – Sefton Park

A surreal masquerade with music, dance, costume and carnival, housed in Sefton Park’s iconic Palm House. Come and join in with dance classes, music from New Orleans and marching bands! There is limited space at this social club, so please call Abbie to register your interest and put your name in the lottery.

Monday 10 February 6:00-8:00pm: Vegan Snacks Social – Aigburth

Lots of people are switching to a vegan diet in order to try to help the environment, so come along to this restaurant and sample some free tasty vegan snacks from their menu. Learn about how making changes to plant-based food may help the planet! There is limited space at this social club, so please call Abbie to register your interest and put your name in the lottery.

Wednesday 12 February 11:00am-12:00pm: Reminiscence Session, The Dockers’ Umbrella – City Centre

Come and share your memories of Liverpool! The Dockers’ Umbrella ran from Alexandra Dock as far south as Dingle and north to Seaforth and Litherland. We’ll be looking at the impact its closure had on Liverpool and how transport has changed since it’s demolition. How did you travel around Liverpool when you were younger, and how has transport changed the landscape of the city?

Thursday 13 February 1:00-3:00pm: Jewellery Making – City Centre

Come and create beautiful necklaces or bracelets with the help of our expert jeweller Anna. We will bring everything you need, and absolute beginners are welcome! Please note there is a small set of stairs at the venue. There is limited space at this social club, so please call Abbie to register your interest and put your name in the lottery.

Friday 14 February 10:00am-3:00pm: Big Day Out at Calderstones Mansion – Allerton

Enjoy a day of wellbeing boosting activities at the Mansion House. We will start with some shared reading, participate in an art workshop, a nourishing lunch and a wellbeing walk around the park! There is limited space at this social club, so please call Abbie to register your interest and put your name in the lottery.

Monday 17 February 6:00-8:00pm: Ten Pin Bowling – Edge Lane

STRIKE! Come and enjoy some good old fashioned fun with your younger neighbours at this classic bowling alley. Even if you’ve never played ten pin bowling before, all are welcome! There is limited space at this social club, so please call Abbie to register your interest and put your name in the lottery.

Bus routes: 7 & 60 stop at the end of Rathbone Road. 8, 9, 10, 10A and 10B stop on Prescot Road. 62 stops on St Oswald’s Street and 204 stops on Mill Lane (all a 10 minute walk away)

 

Wednesday 19 February 6:00-8:00pm: Shared Reading – Tuebrook

We provide a short story and some poetry, and read it aloud, step-by-step as a group. There’s no pressure to read aloud if you don’t want to! Share what you think of the text, the characters, what you think will happen next and how it makes you feel. A great club for those who want to read more, or just like listening to others reading aloud.

Thursday 20 February : Visit to Western Approaches

If local history is your thing, this visit to a WWII bunker will be right up your street! Find out about the staff and work that happened here, learn how to decode morse messages, and discover “The place where WWII was won”. This social club has limited space, so please call Abbie to put your name in the lottery.

Saturday 22 February : Williamson Tunnel Tour – Edge Hill

The Williamson Tunnels Heritage Centre provides an insight into the fascinating underground world created by Joseph Williamson in the early 19th Century. Take a guided tour through a section of the network of tunnels and view exhibitions which depict the life and times of one of Liverpool’s most eccentric characters. This visit is being led by volunteer Christine! There is limited space on this tour, so please call Abbie to put your name in the lottery.

Wednesday 26 February 6:00-8:00pm: Board Games – Wavertree

Choose a game from this quirky cafe’s huge selection! Will you play something classic, or try to learn something new with your neighbours? Favourites like scrabble, cluedo, jenga and boggle await you at this fantastically fun social club.

Thursday 27 February Shiverpool Ghost Walk – City Centre

If you’d like to learn a little bit more about the history of Liverpool’s city centre with a spooky twist then this tour is for you. Our Shiverpool guide CHILLER BLACK will walk us around the Georgian Quarter and we will hear creepy tales, learn about the mysteries & hidden histories of Liverpool and have a thrilling good time!

Saturday 29 February 10:00am-12:00pm: Technology Workshop –

Always wanted to know the difference between wifi and data? Would you love to be able to send a text or email but just can’t get your head around it? Bring your gadgets and technology-related questions along to this workshop, and we will pair you up with a younger neighbour who is tech-savvy and ready to help you out. Just to let you know, one of our charity funders may be at this social club taking photographs and video footage, so chat to Abbie about this when you call her to book on if you’d like to know more.
