Discover Demolition Memorial Keepsake, a participatory project by Liverpool-based Japanese artist anti-cool exploring memorial objects, funerals and ceremonies from different cultures.
Ahead of LightNight and inspired by Japanese cremation ceremonies, aritst anti-cool hosted workshops across Liverpool exploring the idea of special objects of memory which may evoke sadness or negative feelings in their owners, the funeral and ceremony practices of various cultures and countries and ultimately the ritual cremation of some of these objects. Burning rituals were held with participants in which objects of sentimental value, donated by them, were cremated using primitive fire-making tools.
The resulting exhibition consists of a multi-screen video installation made up of participants’ interviews showing their personal stories, why their objects were special to them and why they chose for them to be cremated.
Demolition Memorial Keepsake is a stunning and evocative multi-screen video installation and series of sculpture pieces which explore memory through ritual.
LighNight will run from 5 -10pm on Friday 17 May. For full details visit the Bluecoat Website: http://www.thebluecoat.org.uk/events/view/events/3989
