Dementia Day Care Centre – Harry’s Journey

posted in: News 0

Age Concern Liverpool and Sefton wanted to share some insight into their dementia day care centre with us. Rebecca Anderson contacted us to tell us about Harry’s journey:

“Harry has been attending our day care centre for over three weeks now. He originally visited our poppy centre but as his dementia progressed he could no longer be left alone and needed one to one care during his time there.

His son and daughter in law came to us as they couldn’t leave Harry alone during the day for safety reasons. They needed to continue to work and it was a really hard and difficult time knowing what to do.

Harry is the life and soul of the day centre and we always enjoy him visiting us. He still remembers his working years, he worked on the docks as a superintendent for monitoring grains shipped over from over countries. He loved this job and it’s where he met his best friend Frank who now lives in Germany.

Harry also worked in Spain and got on exceptionally well with everyone he worked with. Harry often goes back to his days working on the docks and talks about what it was like. We have hired a memory suitcase from House of Memories, which he loved. It contained items that took him back to his times working at the docks.

Harry really enjoys his days here at the dementia day care centre. He gets stuck into all the activities and even gets up with the help of the nurses to dance, which we love to see.  He loves to get out into the garden and really looks forward to our therapy dog visiting. He also really enjoys having his showers here as he is now unable to have one at home due to mobility problems.

His family have all mentioned to us that the day centre has given them the time to continue work but also they know he is well looked after and safe here in a great environment.”
