Barbara’s Giant Spectacular volunteering experience

posted in: News 0

HOP Member, Barbara McGrouther, recently volunteered her time to support the Giant Spectacular which took place in Liverpool and Wirral at the beginning of October.

Barbara has written a short article to share her experience with HOP members:

“I had such a great week when the Giants visited and my volunteering role was so interesting.

“What a weekend it was in Liverpool, the Giants visit exceeded all expectations.

“It was busy, exciting, so entertaining and everyone worked very hard to make it a successful event.

“As a ‘City Star / City Hall Ambassador’ I volunteered to be part of the Giants team.

“I first volunteered in 2007 , when Liverpool trained up 200+ people from all over Liverpool and all ages and walks of life to be Ambassadors for 2008 City of Culture.

“I had such an exciting year I was hooked and have been volunteering ever since.

“This year was the third time I have worked with the Giants, I was stationed in the ‘Town Hall Media Hub’ . The volunteers who walk with the Giants need to be fit, but there are roles to suit all ages and abilities.

“I was in St George’s Hall with the Little Boy Giant on Thursday afternoon,  helping to ‘meet and greet’ the public and direct the crowds of people to view and photograph the giant in his hammock. It was busy!

“I loved the expressions on the faces when adults and children first set eyes on this massive puppet. The excitement and amazement was thrilling.

“On the Friday, Saturday and Sunday I was in the Town Hall for the media and press event with reporters and photographers. I was providing information and access to wifi and of course tea/coffee and biscuits.

“The media came from all over, some were allowed onto the roof of the Town Hall to get their perfect shot. They were very impressed with our beautiful Town Hall and facilities, and I was very impressed with the photos taken . I was allowed to watch the Giants from the Town Hall balcony – it was amazing staring into the eyes of a Giant!

“The visit of the Giants coincided with a wedding which took place at the Town Hall, so it was extra busy but the staff are so welcoming and helpful to everyone.

“The bride went up onto the balcony and was delighted to be photographed with the Giants. She was overwhelmed when the huge crowd went wild cheering and clapping for the happy couple. It’s not every bride who shares her big day with Giants! It makes for an exciting day and unique photos.

“Taking part in Culture Liverpool events is always interesting, through from the initial briefing to the end of the event and I can recommend getting involved. You meet lots of people from all over the world, share our fabulous city with visitors who take away positive and happy memories and make new friends who also enjoy volunteering, get out and about on a regular basis. Why not give it a try? You have nothing to lose.”
