Formby ‘Join in for January’ event tackles loneliness and isolation

Sefton Older Persons’ Forum held a ‘Join in for January’ event to encourage older people in Formby to try a new group or activity for the new year.

Justine Shenton, Sefton Older Persons’ Forum Coordinator has shared the project with HOP in the hope that it may inspire other member organisations to run similar events.

The event was held on ‘Blue Monday’, a day in January which is deemed to be ‘the most depressing day of the year’ as we settle into the cold winter months following the Christmas break.

They invited local groups and clubs to have information stalls and encouraged people to attend to join a new club or activity. Organisations and groups exhibiting on the day included a card making group, Formby Civic Society, Formby Library, Formby Rotary, National Trust, Formby Older Persons’ Forum, Befriending Scheme and others.  There was also representation from local health support groups and the University of the Third Age (U3A).

Justine said: “Most people who attended joined a new group and one lady offered to start a new group. We also had entertainment from the Viking Skiffle Band, lunch and a visit from The Mayor of Sefton.  There were over 60 attendees and the event was very sociable.”

The event was run as a Formby Hub partnership venture. Formby Hub is a partnership of local groups and voluntary sector organisations working with Sefton Council to tackle loneliness and isolation amongst older people in Formby.

The Formby Hub has compiled a directory of local groups and activities and is setting up drop in sessions where the directory is available with support from a volunteer to encourage any older people to try a new activity.

If anyone is interested in putting on a similar event Justine is happy to speak with them. Justine’s contact details are:
