GrandFest is a mini festival that has been created to celebrate older people and the skills they have to share. The festival actively promotes the benefits of participating in activities in later life and the rewards of volunteering. Last year it captured a great deal of public and media interest, helping drive brand visibility in a positive way.
In June 2016 a mini festival that has been created to celebrate older people and the skills will be taking place in Spitalfields market, Manchester and the surrounding area.
The aim of GrandFest is simple; we want to raise public awareness of the Royal Voluntary Service, increase the number of volunteers and service users, as well as increase donations
GrandFest 2015 was a great success and our 2015 GrandMakers were positive about the experience of being involved:
“We loved taking part” (Arthur – Woodturner, England)
“I found it very enlightening and quite outside of my usual activities! Very impressed with the energy and enthusiasm of all involved” (Clive – Breadmaker, Wales)
“I think we all hoped it would be the start of something which could continue. I know it is a lot of work but if it raises RVS profile that can only be a good thing” (Rae – Preserve Maker, Scotland)
Grandfest would like talented older people to join some the 2015 Original Makers to give masterclasses in their specialist subject to the general public at the festival. They are looking for talented volunteers or service users aged 70+ (by June 2016) from England, Scotland and Wales who have a skill to share to become 2016 Grandmakers! Subjects include Butchers, Poets, Story Tellers, Potters, Quilting, Knitting, Print makers, and Wickerwork/weavers (basket making) Candle makers.
If know of an older person with skills to share then encourage them to get in touch by visiting www.royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk/grandfest2016 or by calling 02920 739 088
