15 – 24 May 2015 is Dementia Awareness Week at the Bluecoat, and there is a fascinating programme of activities taking place over the rest of the week.
Dementia Awareness Week: Anchor Exhibition

The Alzheimer’s Society and the Bluecoat are now celebrating their third year of the Anchor partnership, offering those living with dementia and their carers an opportunity to participate in meaningful stimulation, social interaction and self expression through the visual arts. This enlightening exhibition demonstrates the creativity of those who have participated in the programme during 2014 – 2015.

Screening: Alive Inside (PG) (2014)

Alive Inside is a joyous cinematic exploration of music’s capacity to reawaken our souls and uncover the deepest parts of our humanity.
Filmmaker Michael Rossato-Bennett chronicles the astonishing experiences of individuals in the USA who have been revitalised through the simple experience of listening to music.
Artist’s Screening and Q&A: Verd de Gris and Soul Journey (2014)

This special event will include a screening of the film Soul Journey which explores ageing and dementia through followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Geoff Brokate and Sharon Marsden from Verd de Gris and readings by writer Paula Sutherland.
Soul Journey is a collaboration between writer Paula Sutherland, photographer / filmmaker Geoff Brokate and artist collective Verd de Gris and features original music by sound artist and composer Nina Perry.
It is a poetic exploration of ageing and dementia where beauty revealed itself in the landscape of the individual. Where those individuals revealed themselves to be anything but diminished and shared their life and experience during the making of this film.

Become a Dementia Friend

These sessions are delivered by Dementia Friends Champion Becky Waite and staff from the Alzhiemer’s Society. You will learn more about dementia and how you can help to create dementia friendly communities and have the chance to pledge to become a Dementia Friend.
